Securing the Future Portal is Govtoday's information resource focusing on the Government’s Sustainable Development Strategy, incorporating the Environmental and Energy sectors.

A Community Forum for sharing knowledge, innovation and best practice, the Portal provides the platform for ongoing Debate, evaluating the Coalition Government’s commitment to provide a strong and sustainable green economy, resilient to climate change.

The Coalition is committed to being the ‘greenest government ever’. This shift to a Green Economy offers substantial opportunities for UK businesses, driving the development of products, services, markets and jobs, and reducing costs through the efficient use of resources by all businesses and consumers.

This commitment is based around three key areas:

  • To drive the agenda on transparency in the sustainable development performance of government by facilitating the release of departmental and supplier data;
  • To improve the sustainability of the supply base so that Government builds a stronger relationship with its suppliers, effectively managing risk and growth;
  • To reform Government sustainable delivery by developing new tools and solutions, which deliver greater efficiency, providing the lead from Government to other sectors.

These three key areas support the Prime Minister’s commitment to cut UK carbon emissions in line with national and international Climate Change Agreement targets of 10 per cent by 2010, 35 per cent by 2020 and 80 per cent by 2050. With Central Government contributing 6 to 7 per cent of the UK’s GHG emissions, the Coalition wants Government to lead by example and establish best practice in mainstreaming Sustainable Development across the UK.

The Securing the Future Portal will provide further information and policy analysis as Government policy is formulated and announced.
